Here are five recent statistics shaping physician pay, as reported by Becker’s: 

1. The District of Columbia saw the largest decrease in the average annual wage for physicians from 2023 to 2024, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Connecticut, California, Nebraska and Oklahoma followed the District of Columbia as the states with the largest decreases in annual wages for physicians. 

2. Maine saw the largest increase in the average annual wage for physicians from 2023 to 2024, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Virginia, Wyoming, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania followed Maine as the states with the largest increases in annual wages for physicians. 

3. New Mexico has the lowest average physician pay satisfaction of any state, according to a new report from salary transparency platform Marit Health. 

4. Nebraska has the highest physician pay satisfaction, according to the Marit Health report. 

5. The nationwide average of physician pay satisfaction is 3.59 on a 5-point scale, with 1 representing very dissatisfied with pay and 5 representing very satisfied with pay.
